Just a few short years ago I was sitting in a hospital room, my husband quietly next to me, getting ready to begin my first chemotherapy treatment. The nurse wrote out all of the medications, in order, and the approximate time frame. I felt ready, prepared, and in good spirits. I had no idea what to expect, but I was feeling lucky that my HER2+/ ER+ breast cancer was found relatively early and the prognosis was good.
I completed a total of 6 chemos, radiation, and multiple surgeries in about 6 months. My body, mind, and spirit were expended and some days when I looked in the mirror, I didn't even recognize myself. Who was this bloated, bald, sad looking person? My husband, children, family, and my team of cheerleaders (the love and support I received was humbling and over whelming!) encouraged me daily, but I had to figure out this new normal.
I was thankful for the doctors and nurses who cared for me and literally saved my life. Today I am healthy and cancer free, but recovery was a long road. I found myself taking multiple medications for physical symptoms (mostly hot flashes!), anxiety, depression, ADD/brain fog and while all of these medications helped, I still didn't feel like myself. I continued to struggle and the side effects were intense. Finally, one of the medications caused my body to have tremors... it felt sort of like a full body hiccup.
It was during this time I started researching neuroplasticity. I had already been using brain training software with my executive function clients, but had found the software to be tedious and difficult. I began searching for a better way. This led me to discover Brainboost.
I poured myself into learning everything I could about Neurofeedback. I found the research so fascinating and it pulled together all of my passions: behavior, technology, teaching, training and helping people! With the assistance of my doctor, I decided to begin fading the medications I was taking (there were 8 at this point). I had already started Neurofeedback on myself and within 3 months I had completely eliminated all but one medication (Tamoxifen - I have to take it!) Slowly, I started feeling like myself again and I noticed subtle changes. The "go to" responses of my past were different now. I had more patience, a paused response rather than an emotional, automatic response. I felt clearer headed. I was sleeping better. At first, I had no idea how or why this was happening, but it was happening. I saw my brainwaves changing. I saw them working together in better harmony. I decided I needed to share this with everyone. My husband, as always, supported my dream and got on board. We learned together. We trained ourselves, our children, family and friends and we saw results every time.
Now it is 3 years later and I feel like cancer was a bit of a blur. I can think about it without getting upset. I can control my negative thoughts when thinking about the future. I am better able to live in the here and now. I'm ready to share Brainboost with the world. I welcome you to join me. I can't wait to tell you my story in person!
